Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a great companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. They are best with well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws who aren't properly socialized can become aggressive, and can even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set so the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who enjoy playing, climbing and interact. They require at least 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local bars and restaurants. Apart from being a fun pet they are also great pets for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their adoration for them. They can also be a nuisance for those who live nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their roar.
The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is determined, breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This is not a quick process, and it is important that the owner has patience and understands that this is not a task to be taken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and aid in resolving any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They cause harm to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member in a plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
Like any species of animal in captivity, a captive gold and blue macaw's health is based on a healthy diet. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw is likely to live up to 60 years. Lolita's Health

The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal issue.
